A kitten’s first food should match its age and whether it can nurse. During the first few weeks, a kitten should get its nutrition from its mother’s milk. If the mother is unavailable or cannot nurse, use a commercial kitten milk replacer and follow the product directions or a veterinarian’s advice.
Kittens typically begin weaning at around 4 weeks old. At that point, offer a soft mixture of complete-and-balanced kitten food and kitten milk replacer or warm water. Canned kitten food is easy to mash; dry kitten food can be softened until it has a porridge-like texture. Put a small amount in a shallow dish and let the kitten explore at its own pace.
Over the next few weeks, gradually make the mixture thicker as the kitten learns to eat. Most kittens are fully weaned by about 8 weeks and can eat complete-and-balanced food made specifically for kittens. Check the package for a statement that the food is appropriate for kitten growth, and ask a veterinarian if you are unsure which product suits your kitten.
Do not give kittens cow’s milk as a substitute for their mother’s milk or kitten formula; it can cause digestive upset and does not provide the right nutrition. Avoid homemade diets, raw food, and adult cat food as a kitten’s primary diet unless a veterinarian has specifically recommended a plan. Growing kittens need a carefully balanced diet, and sudden food changes may upset their stomachs.
Offer fresh water once the kitten is eating solid food. Keep the feeding area calm, use clean dishes, and introduce new food gradually. Very young, weak, or underweight kittens need prompt veterinary guidance, since feeding problems can become serious quickly.
As the kitten grows, meal frequency and portion sizes change. For practical guidance on planning meals by age, see the new kitten feeding plan.
Young kittens generally need several small meals throughout the day, with the exact schedule depending on age and whether they are nursing, bottle-fed, or weaned. Follow veterinary guidance and the food label as you set a routine.
